Read A/V Properties When Adding to Library

Post by jbennett »

I've noticed (on v2.6 for Fire TV) that while the library displays useful A/V attributes like resolution, audio and video codecs, etc., it doesn't actually populate this data in the library until the file is first played. I've just been manually playing and then immediately stopping each new video added to my library to have it read these properties from the file.

Assuming I'm not missing something, would it be feasible to have the library import function read these A/V details from files automatically?

Thanks!

Possible but the process would be intensive as one does not know what the video contains until after it is opened and decoding is started. The demuxer tells part of the details, the codec knows all. Could be done when thumbnails are generated.

Yeah, that explains why I have to play each file, even for just a split-second, in order to grab those details. Just like Schrödinger's Cat, you've ultimately got to open the box. ;)

Fetching them during thumbnail generation sounds great. As with any resource-intensive change, though, it would be good to have an option to turn it on or off in Settings.

Thanks for considering this...

If you use the Plex library feature these data are already populated.

Thanks. I don't have anywhere to run a Plex server at the moment, but may set one up again in the future. Right now I'm appreciating MrMC on Fire TV as a great self-contained, portable alternative to Plex.
