Cannot Connect to Network Server

Post by grasso325 »

I've been spinning my wheels the last week ever since Apple forced a firmware update on my router. I've since rolled that update back, but my system which worked perfectly beforehand, now no longer functions.

My basic setup is:

>AppleTV 4
>Apple Airport Extreme with inbuilt hard-drive

My media resides on the inbuilt hard-drive, and up until now, I've had no issue with connecting to it via this logic:

SMB://Server-ID/USB-Drive/Media-Folder

The disks are locked with a username and password.
I've installed and run "SMB-Up" on my Mac that I control the base station with, but that doesn't seem to effect anything.

The strange thing, is that if I connect my Mac to the network, and attempt to access these disks, there's no issue. Further, if my Mac has recently connected, then the Apple TV/ MrMC is able to connect and everything works.

After time passes, or I shut down the other Mac, files/paths that did work give the follow error:
Error: Operation Timed Out
Remote Share: Couldn't Connect To Network Server

I guess it's either an issue with the Drive going to sleep (and not waking up) - or an issue with authentication. I honestly am at a loss.

Seems to me that disks are going to sleep, when your Mac is connected it keeps them spinning. Is there a way to keep the disks on? Would WOL addon help there?

How would I go about that?

I have Kodi installed on the Mac computer. Should I install something like the below?
https://superrepo.org/kodi/addon/script.advanced.wol/

And then, via Kodi, apply it to the share drive?

And once it's applied to the share-drive, see if my Apple TV functionality returns to normal?

Thanks!

I enabled the WOL addon, and no luck, unfortunately.

I think it may be something with "SMBUp", some minor adjustment I'm not getting right. That and maybe authentication.

I attempt to connect to the same server via Kodi from the MAC and run into the same errors.

However, when I access the drive via the Network (with username and password), and it mounts on the Mac desktop - then the smb://server/disk/mediafolder works on both Kodi and on MrMC.

I'll report if I figure it out - otherwise, if there are other ideas, please let me know.

I was able to use MrMC to watch some media (by mounting the network drive on a separate MAC) - and after the media was complete, the old problem returned.

Perhaps the new log with show what happened/changed?
