It works except on some files.. On files it doesn't work it causes the shield to reboot. :)

The files it doesn't work on, I think, are ones with a dual layer. They'll fall back to HDR or SDR if the system isn't capable of DV.

With the crash though I'm not sure how to get you a log.
I'm pretty sure you can only play single layer DV files on the shield just like the ATV4k.

Plex can't play the dual Layer files either.

I don't mean dual layer like that. perhaps I said it wrong. these particular files I'm talking about play perfectly in DV on the apple tv and in the plex app on the new shield. Anyway, all I mean is that I've seen them fall back to HDR or SDR on devices that don't play DV. Whereas some files have no means of fallback.

@JGrana01 @cosmoxl Could you grab the mrmc.old.log just after the DV reboot, please, via the web interface ("Log Old")

PS: Just do an upload, I forgot the old log is uploaded, too ;)

If it works on Shield, it will most likely work on the AFTV devices that support DV.
But doing test versions on Amazon is far less "agile" than on Google ;)

Re: Dolby vision for Android

Another Android data point. I just installed MrMC on my Sony X930E TV.

Good news and bad news ;-)

Good news - repeated playing of DV videos does not crash the TV.

Bad news - With MediaCodec (Surface) enabled, the TV reported DV (logo in top right corner) and the video played but the screen was totally black.
I disabled MediaCodec (Surface) and enabled MediaCodec and at least a picture showed up on the screen (and the DV logo). The problem is that the colors are off - it appears to be in BT709 color space, not BT2020...

Let me know if you need logs, etc.

Thanks. Pls point me where this test version can be downloaded,
I need to download the apk as I do with Plex beta.
there's no apk to download since this is beta.

to join some dev will have to give you instructions. I don't see them in the forum right now.

I've created a test version for Amazon.

If you want to be part of this testflight, please send an email to [email protected] with the subject "Testflight 3.8.3 DV (FireTV)", include your forum username and email address tied to device.

(Note that, if you opted-out of Amazon marketing communications, you will not get the notification email.)

Ok, I have done some further testing.
FYI, I have MrMC installed on a 2019 Shield, Sony XBR930E, and AppleTV 4K.
The Shield and ATV4k go through a Denon X2200w AVR.
Between the Denon and TV, I have an HDFury Diva that will display the signal information from the Denon - I can monitor what the Shield and ATV are sending. As far as the Sony, since it is “internal” I fly a bit blind.
The DV file is being served over SMB. I wanted to get Plex out of the loop.

Starting with Shield/MrMC 3.9-3 Git:2019-11-15-e7c9bdd:
With Settings-Video-Acceleration at defaults -
DV file plays, TV reports DV, colors are “ok” but somewhat washed out
Diva reports this signal - 4K23.972 422 BT709 12b DV 297MHz 2.2
Main point - color space should be BT2020

Attempting to play the same video a second time - Shield resets

After reset, I disabled Advanced timing. Results where the same as the first test.

Third test. Disable MediaCodec (Surface), enable MediaCodec
Shield crashes/reboots immediately when attempting to play the same video the first time.
I have uploaded a Debuglog.

BTW, the thumbnails for the DV files have incorrect colors.
The same file plays correctly using latest Plex client (their thumbnails are also incorrect as far as colors ;-)

I will cover the Sony XBR930e and ATV in the next post
