Cannot see files

Hi,
I hadnt used my nvidia shield for months and turned it on the other day. It wanted to update so ok, go for it.
Now my MrMc cannot see any of my previous movies on my HDD. It can see the folder, but when I open the folder it says its empty. All the files are actually there -I checked with a PC.
It worked perfectly last time I used it - admittedly quite some months ago - possibly even last year. I’ve looked here snd tried everything I van think of with no luck.
An alternative media player works perfectly but this is inferior to MrMc.
