looks like I need to abuse my new fastnet and find a MVC file to diddle with.

I do have ant man 3d in an iso file and that plays fine in 2d.

Was about to post the same. I too have a bunch of 3D Bluray iso's and they play fine in 2D.

I'm ripping my Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 now so I'll test an iso and MVC mkv.

This is the correct answer. The MVC MKV will playback in 2D without any HW decoders selected, but won't work with VTB or AVF. In an ISO it works with any of the settings (no HW decodes, just VTB, or just AVF).

Thanks everyone for testing and working on this. I can confirm that with both Video Toolbox and AV Foundation hardware acceleration off 3D MVC Mkv files play in 2D.
